I began my professional journey many years ago in the film and television industry, learning the art of story telling through moving pictures and being influenced by the beauty and romance in films created by the light, shade and angle of the camera. I like to use these techniques in my photographic images because I feel it brings a sense of connection with my subject and portrays more than just one moment in time.
Always considering myself the black sheep of my family, with all my known living relatives being school teachers, I realized that I have been surrounded by cameras from and early age with my mum and grandpa capturing most of my childhood on Super 8 film, photographic slides and rolls of camera film. No doubt they have not been surprised by my move from in front of the camera to behind it.
I still laugh at the day I was given my first film SLR camera, being an inquisitive young lad, I promptly took to it with a set of tools, pulling it apart to discover its internal workings. To my amazement, I also managed to reconstruct it and that twin lens Pentax served me well for years after that. It is now sitting proudly in my office as a reminder of my humble beginnings.
Moving into wedding photography in Adelaide in the last few years has ignited my passion for details and I often feel privileged to be part of a loving couple’s day that has all these specially chosen elements that reflect who they are and their love for each other. Again the storyteller in me relishes bringing together all the images in a way, which depicts not just the event, but also the feelings throughout the day.
It’s easy for me to get the best vantage point at any wedding, being extremely tall and thin, I can mimic church columns or tree trunks depending on the setting and I use my outrageous sense of humor and good charm to keep the bride smiling and the groom beaming with happiness.
Much of my inspiration comes from classic films, fashion magazines and old photos and I tend to have an eclectic mix of naturally beautiful and stylised photographs, mixing together modern and yesteryear styles, avoiding the cheesy poses some photographers seem to think their clients wont be embarrassed about when looking through their wedding album in five years time. Plus I have an intolerance to dairy products so no cheesy photos suit me perfectly.
I was recently awarded the 2010 Commercial Photographer of the Year for SA award through the AAPP. I am a state and national award winning photographer. I love winning awards but i love taking photographs so much more.
